| Jackson, Bollinger begin QB battle :: Fri Mar 30, 2007 6:51 am |
The winner of the Vikings' starting QB race won't be clear for another 5 1/2 months, but by opening Wednesday's player workout at Winter Park to the media, the Vikings opened the dialogue. Tarvaris Jackson and Brooks Bollinger are set to battle for the job -- for now. The Vikings could bring in a free agent or draft a passer to add to the battle. "I'm excited as heck about it," Bollinger said, "and I'm going to keep working hard to put myself in the best position possible and help this team have a successful offense and win football games." Meanwhile, Jackson was also commenting on it. "Everybody says we need a quarterback," Jackson said, "but it really don't matter. They don't see what our coaches see. They don't see us practice day after day, so they're going to say a lot of stuff."

He completed 47-of-81 passes for 475 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. He added 77 rush yards and a rushing touchdown as well. Jackson had moments where he looked like a rookie, and other moments where he looked fairly polished and ready to be a starting quarterback. Coach Brad Childress announced at the end of the season that Jackson and backup QB Brooks Bollinger were expected to compete for the starting job in 2007.

| Johnson to mentor Jackson? :: Fri Jan 05, 2007 1:32 am |
Vikings coach Brad Childress ruled 15-year veteran Brad Johnson out of the running for the starting job next year, declaring it an open competition between Tarvaris Jackson - who started the final two games as a promising but raw rookie - and Brooks Bollinger - who was acquired in an August trade to be Johnson's backup. The coach planned to meet with Johnson to gauge his interest, or lack of, in returning next season in "a mentoring role." Johnson was unavailable for comment, but he said after Sunday's finale that he still believes he can be a successful starter.
