Bucky Brooks, of SportsIllustrated.com, reports St. Louis Rams TE Randy McMichael is likely to have an increased role under offensive coordinator Al Saunders. McMichael is coming off the worst season of his career (39 receptions, 424 yards). An NFC scout said McMichael has the ability to put up big numbers in the Rams offense. McMichael is very athletic and could create matchup problems.

The Rams have announced the signing of TE Randy McMichael. The two sides agreed to a three-year deal. A solid receiving tight end, McMichael has posted 60-plus catches in each of the last three seasons, averaging around 10 yards per catch each year with 12 scores. He has never missed an NFL game. "This has been in the works for a while," said Rams coach Scott Linehan. "We even considered trading for him. He is an every-down tight end and a proven starter in the league. He does a lot of things well."

Quarterback Joey Harrington and tight end Randy McMichael were released Monday by the Miami Dolphins. The release of Harrington had been expected, in part because he was due a $1 million roster bonus. In his only season with Miami, he went 5-6 as a starter filling in for Daunte Culpepper, then was benched the final game in favor of Cleo Lemon. McMichael was due a $3 million roster bonus, and his contract was terminated after Miami was unable to swing a trade for him. A starter since his rookie season in 2002, McMichael is the Dolphins' career leader among tight ends with 283 catches for 3,096 yards. He had at least 60 receptions each of the past three years.

Randy McMichael's agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that his client is on the trading block. The Dolphins are asking for a third-round pick for him. "I talked to [Dolphins GM Randy Mueller] and he explained it to me, there's a new head coach and that they're simply exploring all their options," Rosenhaus said during an interview on WSVN-TV. "I don't believe a trade is a foregone conclusion. I still think there's a very solid chance that Randy could still be back with the team. He'd love to stay."
