| Luke McCown in the news | | Buccaneers | McCown wants to compete for starting job :: Sat Apr 12, 2008 10:54 pm | Charlie Campbell, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Luke McCown has his sights set on more than being a backup quarterback, even though QB Jeff Garcia is entrenched as the team's starting quarterback. The team also added QB Brian Griese via trade in the offseason. "Well you know it's always a competition. Jeff is our starter, but that doesn't keep me from competing to be the starter," McCown said. "I want to be the starter. Right now I'm the number two and competing. That's what we are doing right now. We're competing through OTA's. It doesn't matter what you are on the depth chart it's about competing when you get on the field, being prepared, doing what you can to help the team win. And that's the whole point of a team."

| Buccaneers | McCown comments on Simms :: Sat Apr 12, 2008 10:54 pm | Charlie Campbell, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Luke McCown commented on the absence of QB Chris Simms from the team's offseason workouts. Simms, who has decided to work out on his own, has not been in attendance for the team's first two OTA's and believes his long-term future is not with the Buccaneers. "Well I certainly wish Chris all the best. He's a good friend of mine. That's his call I guess. It's really...I guess I don't have more to say about that," McCown said. "He's a great player, he's been through a rough time coming back from this injury and I've spoke with him. He said he feels well and he feels like he's doing what he thinks is right. That's all he can do. I wish the best for him. If he decides to come and help us out, he'll certainly be a help to this team."

| Gradkowski remains starter :: Tue Dec 05, 2006 11:44 pm | Jon Gruden is sticking with rookie QB Bruce Gradkowski. The Tampa Bay coach reiterated Monday that the sixth-round draft pick is not the only reason the Buccaneers (3-9) have the NFL's lowest scoring offense and are assured of finishing with their third losing record in the past four seasons. Gradkowski has lost six of nine starts since taking over for the injured Chris Simms and has thrown for nine touchdowns and nine interceptions, including three picks in Sunday's 20-3 loss at Pittsburgh. The Bucs, who've scored a league-low 145 points, avoided being shut out for the second time by kicking a field goal on the final play. "I don't forsee a quarterback change, although if we continue to throw interceptions it will be a change we obviously need to make," Gruden said. "There are some things Bruce did well in the game. There are some things he obviously didn't do well. We had five balls dropped, some game-changing drops. We've got to play a lot better as an offensive football team." With Simms out for the year after having his spleen removed in September, Tim Rattay is Gradkowski's backup. Luke McCown, who had offseason knee surgery and was on the physically unable to perform list until late October, is the No. 3 quarterback.
