Brad Johnson signed a contract Monday night with the Dallas Cowboys, who wanted a veteran quarterback to team up with Tony Romo. Johnson's agent, Phil Williams, said the quarterback got a three-year contract. The 38-year-old Johnson became an unrestricted free agent last week when the Minnesota Vikings, in a long-expected move, released the 15-season veteran.

The Vikings have officially released veteran QB Brad Johnson. Johnson finished 2006 with just nine passing touchdowns and 15 interceptions, completing 270-of-439 passes for 2,750 yards and added 82 rush yards and a rushing touchdown. Johnson did not finish 2006 as the starting quarterback and apparently fell out of favor with the coaching staff in Minnesota. "Brad has been a true pro throughout his career and we wish him the best as he moves forward," Vikings coach Brad Childress said in a statement. "Brad was an important part of the team and a guy who led by example on and off the field. He's a class act and a guy younger players could learn a lot from about what it takes to play in the NFL."

Vikings coach Brad Childress ruled 15-year veteran Brad Johnson out of the running for the starting job next year, declaring it an open competition between Tarvaris Jackson - who started the final two games as a promising but raw rookie - and Brooks Bollinger - who was acquired in an August trade to be Johnson's backup. The coach planned to meet with Johnson to gauge his interest, or lack of, in returning next season in "a mentoring role." Johnson was unavailable for comment, but he said after Sunday's finale that he still believes he can be a successful starter.
