The Kansas City Star reports that Chiefs GM Carl Peterson expects a decision and negotiations on extending TE Tony Gonzalez's contract to go down to the wire this offseason. The team has until Feb. 22 to assign a franchise tag on Gonzalez, which would tender him for one year at the average salary of the top-five paid players at his position. "We have been making proposals and counterproposals," Peterson said. "Will we get it done? I'm always optimistic that we will."

The Chiefs and TE Tony Gonzalez agreed in principle to a five-year contract extension Friday that will keep the All-Pro in Kansas City. "Simplistically, we're very pleased to get this done," Peterson said in a statement. "It will, in all essence, allow Tony Gonzalez to finish his career with the Kansas City Chiefs. The obvious is he's been a very, very productive player for us. I think for our fans in Kansas City it was important for us to get this done. He's done a marvelous job for us both on and off the football field."
