Ethan J. Skolnick, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports retired QB Jay Fiedler (shoulder) said the reason he retired was because of his injured shoulder. Fiedler had a bad shoulder that required two surgeries from the initial injury he sustained in 2005. Fiedler said he tried rehabbing but he could only get his shoulder back to 80 percent, nothing beyond that.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the Falcons are expected to work out QB Jay Fiedler, according to his agent. Fiedler is coming back from a major shoulder injury and did not play in the league last year.

With the Bucs thinking about making a move to get a better QB on staff, the St. Petersburg Times reports that QB Jay Fiedler is being ruled out because he's having exploratory surgery on his right shoulder this week. Fiedler was in the Bucs' training camp.

The New York traded backup quarterback Brooks Bollinger to Minnesota for second-year defensive tackle C.J. Mosley. Bollinger, in his fourth NFL season, started nine games and threw for 1,558 yards and seven touchdowns for the Jets last year after Chad Pennington and Jay Fiedler were injured.

Jay Fiedler's bid to make the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ended before the injured quarterback could even get on the field. The Bucs released the former Miami Dolphins and New York Jets player and signed offensive tackle Cornell Green on Wednesday. Fiedler, who signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent on June 29, is recovering from surgery on his right shoulder and had been unable to practice during training camp.

If Jay Fiedler still is a week or 10 days from being activated from the physically unable to perform list, that means he won't be in uniform until the third preseason game. Any longer delay could prompt the Bucs to trade for another quarterback. One possibility is Jets' backup Brooks Bollinger, who is suddenly a longshot to stick in New York with a four-man battle that includes Chad Pennington, newly acquired Patrick Ramsey and rookie Kellen Clemens.

Any longer delay could prompt the Bucs to trade for another quarterback. One possibility is Jets' backup Brooks Bollinger, who is suddenly a longshot to stick in New York. Bollinger did not play Friday night against the Bucs, which is not a good sign if he hopes to stay in New York. Bollinger also has some experience under Bucs quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett, the Jets former offensive coordinator.

The departure of Brian Griese, who helped Tampa Bay to a 5-1 start last season, left the Bucs without a proven backup for Simms. Former Dolphins and Jets starter Jay Fiedler was signed last month. But he's recovering from a shoulder injury that sidelined most of 2005 and began training camp on the physically unable to perform list. Luke McCown, who finished last season as the No. 2 quarterback, also is on the physically unable to perform list with a knee injury. Former 49ers starter Tim Rattay, rookie Bruce Gradkowski and first-year pro Jared Allen are the other QBs in camp.
