I just read an interesting article from Fangraphs in response to the Rockies going with only 4 starting pitchers. Although I don't see it ever happening, they propose an interesting idea on how to use statistics and play to the advantage the pitcher has the first time through the order.

| It was a pretty odd thing to watch in the Phils-Rox series. I don't think it will work, but I understand the basic strategy. We'll see what happens. |

| I didn't read your link but I hear this too. It could actually work since the starters are all on a 60-70 pitch limit. Could put a huge strain on their bullpen though especially against teams that work the count well. Occasionally they could hit their limit in the 3rd or 4th inning. |

To sum up the article:
Have 3 4-man pitching staffs. Each pitcher pitches to roughly 10 batters, eliminating the advantage the hitter gains with each at bat.
Each 4 man staff pitches every 3rd day.
Without the need of an ace, a closer or any other big name starters, you can then spend all your money of offense and collect all the middle of the road pitcher types who can make it through the order once but couldn't put together quality starts week after week. |

| Thanks for clearing that up Krush I guess I originally misunderstood the 4 man rotation theory. The Jays have actually been using this approach with their AAA affiliate the Vegas 51's for awhile now. |

The article was written in response the the Rockies 4 man rotation more as an alternative to the norm. Not as a, here's how the 4 man rotation works.

How does that work if they need a spot starter to be called up? |

| They are using about 9 starting pitchers in total. With the history of injury the Jays have had with their starters they figure this will keep them from burning out. When the time comes they'll try and stretch a couple out until they feel they can handle at least 5 innings. |
