Monthly thread instead of a weekly one. Season officially starts at noon with the Rangers and Ning. It's Melrose's return as coach, and Stamkos will make his debut as a second-line center. The Rangers continue a New York sports trend and added more old, broken down talent in Naslund and Redden. Zherdev maybe the only acquiring worth a damn. Obviously Jagr's gone, and Avery's done, too.

Then, we could actually see a good game as the Cup losers take on the playoff chokers in a Pens-Sens battle. Satan (last 70-point season in '02) and Fedotenko (career-high is 41 points) look to replace Hossa and Malone. Playing with Crosby means they'll do fine. Defensively is where they appear to have trouble as Whitney's out until January and Gonchar, February. Also gone are the annoying and the enforcing: Ruutu and Laraque. The top Sens line of Spezza, Heatley and Alfredsson is assuredly nixed after being shutout in the reverse Heimlich in the playoffs, though the line had 13 of the 18 goals last year vs. Pitt. Defensively, Redden and Meszaros are gone, but in are Jason Smith, Kuba and Picard. Emery's gone to Russia, but he had lost his job to Gerber anyway.

Get your popcorn ready!

Rangers had two 2-1 victories over the Ning, and the Pens-Sens split a home and home.

The minor league Phantoms beat the Flyers. Scary loss or big positive down the line? Perhaps a combo of both.

Games continue today with quadruple header.
