The awaited debut of the longest last name in Major League Baseball history occured two nights ago as Jarrod Saltalamacchia made his debut for the Atlanta Braves, on his 22nd birthday no less, as backup nobody C Brayan Pena hit the DL. A guy touted as one of the better offensive and defensive catchers, if not the best combination of the two, in the minors, he had a 1.022 OPS and 6 homers in 81 AB in double-A after a poor showing last year (.733 OPS, nine HR in 313 AB). His BB/K (125/187) has been stellar since 2005 began.

He's probably a flier in deeper leagues (he'll be sent down sooner than later), but eventually a regular if/when the Braves move McCann to first.

They'll move McCann to first then for the future? I was always wondering what they'd do with those two since they just signed McCann to a big contract and Saltamachicca's like one of the better young catchers.

Well with Jones leaving most likely after this season, they can juggle some players around to make room for everyone.

I doubt Salty is going anywhere.

The Braves grow and use their own talent.

Obviously they have alot of theyre own talent and keep there prospects. But when you say he isn't going anywhere becuase they grow and use theyre own talent, is wrong. case in point, Andy Marte.

Chipper Jones
Andruw Jones
Brian McCann
John Smoltz

Now what, besides a little thought that maybe Thorman can turn out to be serviceable, would keep the Braves from holding onto a switch-hitting C/1B with excellent defense behind the plate, and an excellent approach to hitting?

I just can't see how an organization could part with a guy like this, much of the reason why I wanted the Cubs to draft Wieters.
