Weekly 2-Start Pitchers - Week 9 By Scott Mickels May 27, 2006, 4:03 pm
This column deals with pitchers with two starts each week. However, if you own pitchers with only one start, as we all do, sometimes it’s hard to decide between two similar pitchers, or whether you should go with the starter or the closer. If you have any kind of dilemmas like those staring you in the face each week, don’t hesitate to email me with them. I’m more than happy to help you out and get your team’s rotation pointed in the right direction.
NOTE: These starts are not set in stone. They can change for any variety of reasons; managerial moves, injuries, rain-outs, etc. Please keep in mind they are probable.

Weekly 2 Start Pitchers - Week 26 - Final Week! By Scott Mickels September 17, 2005, 6:38 pm
This is it, folks! The final week of the major league baseball season is upon us. I really hope this column has helped all of you out there. I’ve had a lot of fun writing it up for you each week. If you’re lucky you’re still playing this week, but if not, look no further than to “Mick’s Picks” for my fantasy football insight. Congrats to those of you who’ve made your league’s playoffs, and good luck to the fantasy football owners out there this year! Until next season…
INJURIES
- Pedro Martinez will be shut down for the season because of his most recent toe injury.
- Horacio Ramirez at one point this week apparently lost his spot in the rotation to Jorge Sosa. Everything I’ve read, however, has Ramirez starting, but you might want to pick up Sosa just in case. Watch this situation closely.
NOTE: These starts are not set in stone. They can change for any variety of reasons; managerial moves, injuries, rain-outs, etc. Please keep in mind they are probable.

Weekly 2-Start Pitchers - Week 24 By Scott Mickels September 10, 2005, 3:12 pm
This column deals with pitchers with two starts each week. However, if you own pitchers with only one start, as we all do, sometimes it’s hard to decide between two similar pitchers, or whether you should go with the starter or the closer. If you have any kind of dilemmas like those staring you in the face each week, don’t hesitate to email me with them. I’m more than happy to help you out and get your team’s rotation pointed in the right direction.
INJURIES
- Josh Beckett is playing through shoulder tendonitis. It did not seem to bother him much in his last outing, but the injury risk is there--as if Beckett wasn’t injury-prone enough. He’s a must-start when healthy, but with his shoulder bothering him the rest of the season, you should start him at your own risk.
- Josh Fogg will probably get the start on Tuesday. The MRI came back negative on his hand, which was hit by a batted ball in his last start. There’s a small chance Zach Duke could come back and take Fogg’s spot, but he probably won’t be ready by Tuesday, which means Fogg would get the start and consequently have 2-start status this week. He should only be considered in NL-only leagues.
- Ted Lilly felt pain in his shoulder blade in his last start, but isn’t expect to miss any time. Good news! Lilly qualifies for two starts this week. He should be starting in all AL-only leagues, and deeper mixed leagues.
- Kyle Lohse took a bat to manager Ron Gardenhire’s door and broke the handle. More importantly, he injured his finger in the process. Not very smart by Lohse, but apparently him and Gardenhire have put it behind them. His finger doesn’t seem bad enough to force him to miss any time. Lohse will have two starts, and should be starting for AL-only leagues only.
- Jason Schmidt suffered a right groin strain his last time out. The trainer says he’ll miss at least one start, but Schmidt seems confident he can go. Keep a close eye on this, as Schmidt could have 2-start status if he can start on Monday. If he can’t go, Kevin Correia would take his place.
NOTE: These starts are not set in stone. They can change for any variety of reasons; managerial moves, injuries, rain-outs, etc. Please keep in mind they are probable.

Weekly 2 Start Pitchers - Week 23 By Scott Mickels September 6, 2005, 9:17 pm

INJURIES
- Kevin Correia left his last start after just two innings because of discomfort in his shoulder. He will likely miss his next start and maybe more. It's unknown who will replace him in the rotation. He should benched until further notice.
- Mike Mussina is out at least two weeks with inflammation in his right elbow. Moose would only be able to make 2, maybe 3, starts the rest of the season. That's if he returns at all. Chances are, his season is done. This is perfect opportunity to drop Moose and pick up a young recent call-up.
- John Smoltz should be able to make his next start in Tuesday. He has been bothered by a neck strain, but says he feels he’ll be able to go. If that's true, Smoltz is a no-brainer in any league.
NOTE: These starts are not set in stone. They can change for any variety of reasons; managerial moves, injuries, rain-outs, etc. Please keep in mind they are probable.

Mailbag
Joe: I'm in a 12 team roto league with a pretty solid pitching lineup as follows: Pedro Martinez, Andy Pettitte, Tim Hudson, Felix Hernandez, Jaret Wright, Mark Buehrle, Doug Davis, Zach Duke (DL), Brad Lidge, Danys Baez, Miguel Batista and Huston Street
I've pitched 1,089 innings with about a month left in the season and have 161 innings remaining and I'm leading the league in ERA (2.87), WHIP (1.15), Saves (117) and I'm second in Wins with 77 and that’s really all I need pitching wise. I was just wondering which pitchers I should bench and which pitchers I should start for the rest of the season so I don't go over my innings, or should I rotate them based on Favorable matchups?
Mickels: Given your situation, you have to play the favorable matchups. You can’t really play an extra closer as that won’t help your wins, although it helps your innings pitched. I might look to sit players down the stretch, like Beuhrle, because once their team has clinched, they may look to give their top pitchers some needed rest before the playoffs. On the other side of the coin, look to start guys like Pettitte and Lidge as their team is in the middle of a wild card race and the Astros won’t be sitting any of their top starters unless they become completely out of it. Also, consider picking up some of the young recent call-ups around the league. Players such as Jason Vargas, Matt Cain, Scott Baker and even Paul Maholm could prove to be very valuable, as most hitters haven’t seen much of these pitchers, and these pitchers have a little extra drive as they are trying to impress for next year; both are recipes for success. And also very rarely will a manager leave a youngster in more than 6 innings. Not only will that give you a chance for more wins, but shouldn’t hurt your innings-pitched either. The youngsters may hurt your WHIP a bit, as most don’t have major league command yet, but none of the guys I named should hurt your team so much they’ll lose a category for you. Good luck!
