Two Start Pitchers :: Week 11
by Scott Mickels
Published: June 9, 2013, 4:15 pm

There aren't any Injury Watch's this week, so I wanted to take the opportunity to talk about the Pirates' top pitching prospect Gerrit Cole.  Cole is expected to make his highly-anticipated major league debut on Tuesday at home against San Francisco. He's just another one of the many young talented pitchers having their coming out party this season.  Cole was the first overall pick in the 2011 MLB draft out of UCLA.  While at UCLA, Cole was phenomenal, setting several school records and becoming one of the best pitchers in school history—and was also a teammate of the Indians' Trevor Bauer.  He's a tall, hard-throwing righty that can reach triple digits on the radar gun.  He has a plus 4-seam fastball with movement (probably his best pitch), a good two-seam fastball with some sink to it, a decent curveball (some call a slurve) and a change-up.  If he could learn to be more effective with his change-up, he could make even the best hitters in the majors look foolish.  Cole's delivery looks the same whether it's a fastball, curveball or change-up.  He definitely has intent every time he throws the ball as it looks like he's trying to throw it through the backstop.  If he can mix in that change-up, he'll keep hitters off-balance and guessing all day. If there's any criticism to Cole's game it's that he tends to have trouble with his command and hands out too many free passes.  However, he has worked on his mechanics and has cut down on the walks recently.  Cole is currently 3-2 with a 2.91 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 35 strikeouts in 48 innings pitched at Triple-A Indianapolis.  I talked about him in my pre-season Sleepers article and told fantasy owners to be ready to pounce on him when he gets called up.  Well, now seems to be the time, so go get Cole off your waiver wire immediately.  Those of you in standard leagues can likely afford to take a wait-and-see approach with him, but those of you in deeper leagues should consider Cole a Keep in Mind option for Week 11 with the potential to develop into much more.

Good luck to your fantasy teams!  Now, on to what we all came here for, the Two-Start Pitchers!

Of course, if you have any pitching questions, don’t hesitate to email me with them at scottmickels@fantasyplaymakers.com.  Also, don’t forget to check out Mick’s Fantasy Podcast! It goes hand-in-hand with this article!

NOTE:  These starts are not set in stone. They can change for any variety  of  reasons: managerial moves, injuries, rain-outs, etc. Please keep  in mind  they are probable.
