Two Start Pitchers :: Week 21 by Scott Mickels Published: August 12, 2008, 10:33 pm
Week 21 is loaded with four Injury Watch's. The first comes to us from the AL where we have the Oakland A's Sean Gallagher who is suffering from soreness in his shoulder. He's currently scheduled to start this Thursday (8/14) against the Rays. Even if he gets through that start without any problems, he'll still be a huge injury risk for Week 21. Gallagher is someone best left for AL-only leagues when healthy. The second Injury Watch comes to us courtesy of the Big Apple where Phil Hughes is slated to make his long-awaited return this Sunday (8/17) against the Royals. His return was pushed back and will most likely lose his two-start status. Despite that, Hughes makes an intriguing option to consider. Hughes was lights out last September, so it gives you hope he could put up similar numbers around the same time this year. If you have room to stash him, he's someone to snag in most leagues. Otherwise, give him a start or two before grabbing him in AL-only and deep mixed leagues.
Staying in New York, but switching to the NL, the third comes to us from New York where Mets' starter John Maine is expected to pitch Wednesday (8/13) at Washington. Keep an eye on this situation for two reasons: 1, if Maine pitches well, he should keep his two-start status for Week 21, and 2, if he doesn't pitch well, he could be used as a reliever to help remedy that beleaguered Mets bullpen. If he does keep his two-start status, Maine is best used in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues. Our final Injury Watch comes from Atlanta where the Braves' Tom Glavine is expected to start this Thursday (8/14) against the Cubs. Glavine has been on a rehab assignment dealing with elbow problems. Depending on how his start goes Thursday will tell you if he'll be a two-start pitch for Week 21. Even if he gets through that outing without any setbacks, he's probably best left for NL-only this week.
Unfortunately, there aren't any emails this week. You're a part of this column too! If you have any questions you'd like answered, don't hesitate to email me with them at scottmickels@fantasyplaymakers.com. I'm more than happy to help you out and get your team's rotation pointed in the right direction. Now, without further ado, on to the two-start pitchers!
NOTE: These starts are not set in stone. They can change for any variety of reasons; managerial moves, injuries, rain-outs, etc. Please keep in mind they are probable.
