Ready To Pounce :: 5/5/08

Santiago Casilla – Is anybody else seeing this? I'm convinced that Oakland can trade an ace for a 12-year old, and that ace will deteriorate while the 12-year old will come to Oakland and become an excellent pitcher right away. Their rotation has started to get noticed, but the bullpen is absolutely nasty. The only thing more amazing than Casilla going over 14 innings without giving up a run is the fact that he's not even the only reliever on Oakland with an ERA of 0. Andrew Brown has thrown 16 scoreless innings, and Joey Devine has given up one run in 10 innings. Casilla has only walked two batters and has recorded at least two strikeouts in his last three outings. If Huston Street finds his way on the DL again, Casilla should be next in line for save opportunities. If not, he could still be valuable as an excellent middle reliever.

Darrell Rasner – Well, everything seems normal for the Yankees so far in early May. Two young pitchers with great potential have come out flat, and Yankees fans are in panic mode already as Yankees haters decide that one bad month means that Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy will be horrible pitchers for the rest of their careers. Yep, this is the norm in New York. Perhaps the completely un-hyped Rasner can bring a change of luck, or at least a quality start here and there. He put up Cliff Lee like numbers in Triple-A Scranton, posting a 4-0 record with a 0.89 ERA. Don't expect anything like that in the majors, but you can probably do a lot worse in AL-Only leagues and deeper mixed leagues, especially if like me, you took Kennedy.

Josh Fields – Let's try again with a White Sox position player. With a month of baseball past us, Joe Crede has fallen back to earth. Crede only won the job since nobody wanted to trade for him, and if the White Sox were smart, they should try their luck now that Crede showed flashes of production in April. It would seem to make perfect sense to try to trade him now and give Fields the job that Crede at first was seemingly only keeping warm. Fields won't ever hit .300, but he could bring some huge power numbers and a couple of steals here and there. Continue to keep Fields on your fantasy radar in hopes that he'll soon get the call-up.

Justin Miller – Kevin Gregg hasn't quite been lights out as the Marlins' closer. He's already walked nine batters to give him an ugly 1.41 WHIP, and he's given up a run in his last three outings. Miller, while also shaky with his control at times, has kept his ERA to a low 2.40 and strikes out batters at an excellent pace. Gregg only has one year under his belt as a closer, so it's not like he has a long track record to keep his job safe, making Miller an intriguing candidate to become the closer down the stretch.

Adam Miller – Another Miller looking to make an impact is Adam Miller, the once highly touted prospect that has suffered setbacks with injuries. Unfortunately, he won't be ready soon enough to take advantage of Jake Westbrook's DL stint, but as long as he can stay healthy, he is too talented to stay in the minors. If he can enter the rotation later in the year and pitch to his capability, the Indians will have one of the best rotations in baseball.

Gregor Blanco – Matt Diaz was finally given a chance to be the everyday starter for the Braves, but he has proved that he simply can not hit right-handed pitchers. Blanco benefits greatly from this and he should continue to get plenty of playing time against righties. He might not be the most attractive option, but his high average and speed could prove to serve well for a team in a deep league. With the Braves' loaded lineup and Blanco's ability to make contact, he could score runs in bunches as well.
