MLB Mailbag :: Volume 2 by Adam Hathaway Published: March 19, 2008, 4:36 pm
Most of the fantasy draft season is out of the way. I only have 1 draft left that I probably won't be able to participate in because it is on Easter Sunday. I don't see myself convincing my wife that I should be drafting instead of celebrating with the family. Anyway just a few things of note before I dive into the mailbag:
1. Yahoo's draft system stinks. I was drafting last night and ended up taking Rowand in the 5th round. Not the worst thing that can happen but it did make me miss out on a few people and it did make me change my strategy a bit.
2. I love drafting with people that are passionate about their teams and decide to take someone like Wakefield in the 10th round, or refuse to draft any Yankee players.
3. When you are in a league with minor league players make sure that if you are trading your minor league pick you are positive the person you are trading for is actually going to start.
4. Another thing I love is the notion that you should not draft good players on bad teams. This allows me to get some good players later on in drafts.
5. This was a bad week for Obama and yes I was once a fan, I have switched affiliations and for more on this check out my blog. Questions of the Week
Well that is my rant for the week. Without further ado here is the mailbag.
"I'm in a 3 person head to head keeper league. I've decided to keep Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera, and am undecided on the 3rd. Should I keep Jimmy Rollins or Carlos Beltran? I was thinking that shortstop is a hard position to come by, but Beltran could get back on track in that stacked lineup. Thanks!" - Josh C. Quincy, MA
Josh, you must keep Rollins. He was NL MVP and even though I think he may be a bit overrated I still think he is better than Beltran. Beltran has remained consistent with his .270ish batting average but his power appears to be slipping. He had less doubles and HRs last year than he did in 2006 despite the fact that he had more at bats.
"Which fantasy, feel-good story of 2007 is more likely to disappoint owners in 2008? Josh Hamilton or Rich Ankiel." - Jim F.
Jim I don't think either is going to be a disappointment this season. Both made major strides last season and despite the steroid allegations and the bad second half last season, Ankiel is continuing to do well this spring. If I had to pick one it would be Ankiel. The reason being that he does have those steroid allegations against him, he had a poor second half last season, and he had to move from pitcher to the outfield. Hamilton is ripping through Spring Training, he had a good second half last season, and his drug issues appear to be behind him.
"Since you are a Red Sucks fan I would like to know out of these 4 young pitchers who do you think will do the best this season, Buchholz, Lester, Hughes, Kennedy? Red Sox still suck Yankees live on." - Rocky, Long Island, NY
Thanks Rocky, this gives me the opportunity to provide you with my Homer answer of the week. Of course I am not going to pick a Yankee here, but I will give you good reasons why I won't. Lester has proven he is a winner at the major league level. He has more major league experience that all the others and he has less hanging on his shoulders than the others. The Yankees organization refused to trade Hughes and Kennedy for Santana, the best pitcher in the game. The Yankees are going to live and die on how well Hughes and Kennedy perform in the rotation because their rotation is aging and last year underperformed. Buchholz has a lot riding on his shoulders because Boston fans will expect a lot out of him. His no-hitter last season did not help those expectations to be reeled in at all. Lester will be in the rotation and will have less pressure on him than he had last season when he was just trying to stay on the major league roster. Now he is pretty much guaranteed a position in the rotation and can just focus on his game.
"Meat loaf with ground turkey, are you a woman? Next you are going to tell me you prefer Chicken over a nice Rib Eye steak." - Teddy, Houston, TX
Well Teddy I have to say I do prefer chicken over steak. Give me a Rocky Top Chicken over your finest steak any day. I am not a big fan of steak. The only steak I like is the Portuguese meat on a stick. Not that tough chewy kind that many of you Portagees try to throw at me. The kind my father-in-law makes that melts in your mouth.
That's all I have time for this week guys but get your questions into me for next weeks edition of FPM Mailbag. fpmadmin@gmail.com
