Mick's Picks :: Week 14
by Scott Mickels
Published: December 12, 2009, 11:16 pm

Make sure to check here every week! Each week, I'll suggest three players that are likely on your league's waiver wire that could provide a spark to your fantasy team. Of course, if you have any questions you'd like me to answer, please send them to me at scottmickels@fantasyplaymakers.com.

 Now, for this week's Mick's Picks...

Mick's Picks - Week 14

Davone Bess, WR, MIA (@ JAX)

FPM Spin: Bess has quietly had a very good year. He's especially been a beast in PPR leagues as he has almost twice as many receptions as the Dolphins' next best receiver. He's had a few 6 and 7-reception games, but really broke out last week with 10 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. He has a good match-up this week against the Jaguars' 24-ranked pass defense, and while repeating last week's performance likely won't happen, approaching similar numbers is realistic. I don't suggest benching anyone you'd normally start, especially with the fantasy playoffs looming, but if you happen to be in need of some depth at receiver, Bess makes a decent #3 receiver in most leagues.

Season Stats - 59 receptions, 548 yards, 1 TD

Bruce Gradkowski, QB, OAK (vs. WAS)

FPM Spin: Since becoming the starter three weeks ago, Gradkowski has thrown for 691 yards and 6 touchdowns. That's an average of 230 yards and 2 touchdowns a game. He also averages 34 attempts a game during that same span, so if he doesn't give you quality, you'll at least get quantity. He had his biggest game of the year last week throwing for 308 yards and 3 scores against a solid Steelers defense. Like just about every other player that will appear on Mick's Picks for the rest of the season, he's not someone you'd bench a normal starter for, but he's playing well enough against good competition to be worth stashing in deeper leagues. It's very likely the Raiders will be behind early in the rest of their games, excluding the meeting with Cleveland in Week 16, so Gradkowski will likely to be called on to throw it often. Consider him a high-end #3 quarterback in most leagues.

Season Stats - 854 yards, 6 TD, 3 INT

Devin Thomas, WR, WAS (@ OAK)

FPM Spin: Thomas is slowly developing into a go-to receiver right in front of our eyes. His receptions have increased in each of the last four weeks, and his yardage has increased each of the last three weeks. He easily had his best game of his young career last week catching 7 balls for 100 yards and two scores. He was able to get open all day last week and seemed to be Jason Campbell's favorite target throughout the game. It'll take at least another game or two of this type of production before I'll suggest him as a reliable starter, but things are looking promising. With the Oakland secondary likely focusing on Santana Moss, and the fact they shut down opposing tight ends, meaning Fred Davis will likely not be much of a factor, Thomas should get his opportunities. Consider him a decent #3 receiver in deeper leagues.

Season Stats - 23 receptions, 287 yards, 3 TD

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Garrett Hartley, K, NO: The new kicker of the New Orleans Saints' potent offense.

Quinton Ganther, RB, WAS: Gets the start at running back this week against Oakland.

Evan Moore, TE, CLE: Has led the team in targets the last two weeks.
