Micks Picks :: Week 10 by Scott Mickels Published: November 14, 2009, 7:20 pm
Make sure to check here every week! Each week, I'll suggest three players that are likely on your league's waiver wire that could provide a spark to your fantasy team. Of course, if you have any questions you'd like me to answer, please send them to me at scottmickels@fantasyplaymakers.com.
Now, for this week's Mick's Picks... Mick's Picks - Week 10
Ladell Betts, RB, WAS (vs. DEN) FPM Spin: With Clinton Portis out with a concussion, Betts is expected to be the feature back for the Redskins this week, albeit in somewhat of a committee. Betts is dealing with a sprained ankle of his own, but is not expected to miss any time because of it. Betts is facing the Broncos 8th-ranked rush defense, so the chances of him having a big game fantasy-wise is small. But, that's not why he's on here this week. The situation with Portis and Betts is very similar to the situation in Philadelphia with Westbrook and McCoy. Obviously, Betts doesn't have fantasy value unless Portis is hurt. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting go grab Betts and start him this week. He's simply an insurance policy and worth a flier if you own Portis, or happen to be thin at running back.
Season Stats - 26 carries, 91 yards, 1 TD
Chris Chambers, WR, KC (@ OAK)
FPM Spin: Oddly enough, it was Malcolm Floyd, Chambers' replacement in San Diego, who was in this spot last week. This week, however, it's Chambers in the 2-hole. As I mentioned last week, Chambers was released by the Chargers only to be immediately claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Chiefs. He is getting up there in age as he just turned 31 this past August, but he showed last week he still has something left in the tank as he caught 3 balls for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Like in San Diego with Vincent Jackson, Chambers has a nice compliment on the other side of the field in Dwayne Bowe. Bowe will likely face off with Nnamdi Asomugha this week which should leave Chambers in single coverage all game long. With that in mind, this has the making of a productive fantasy day for Chambers, and maybe even Lance Long. He is dealing with a sore foot, but he's not expected to miss any time. Consider Chambers a decent #3 receiver in deeper leagues.
Season Stats - 12 receptions, 192 yards, 3 TD

Kolby Smith, RB, KC (@ OAK) FPM Spin: Jamaal Charles did nothing in his first start of the season to establish himself as the Chiefs starting running back. He only received 2 more carries than backup Kolby Smith. This leaves the door open for Smith to start playing his way into a bigger workload. He seemed to be the Chiefs' goal-line back last week, although he didn't get into the end zone. It's only a matter of time before Smith starts getting at least half of the carries, including the ones at the goal line. I believe ultimately he'll be the Chiefs feature back before season's end. In addition to this week at Oakland, the Chiefs also face the Chargers, Bills and Browns weak rush defenses later in the season. Favorable match-ups like those and Smith's ever-increasing workload makes him a great player to stash and wait. Consider him a low-end #3 running back in most leagues.
Season Stats - 4 carries, 17 yards, 0 TD
HONORABLE MENTIONSAaron Brown, RB, DET: If Kevin Smith's shoulder injury lingers, Brown could see an expanded role in the Lions offense.
Josh Freeman, QB, TB: The starter in Tampa and is coming off an impressive game last week as the Bucs upset the Packers.
James Jones, WR, GB: Despite catching no more than 4 balls in a game all season, he's managed to find the end zone 3 of the last 4 weeks.
