Micks Picks :: Week 8 by Scott Mickels Published: October 31, 2009, 11:02 am
Make sure to check here every week! Each week, I'll suggest three players that are likely on your league's waiver wire that could provide a spark to your fantasy team. Of course, if you have any questions you'd like me to answer, please send them to me at scottmickels@fantasyplaymakers.com.
Now, for this week's Mick's Picks... Mick's Picks - Week 8
Fred Davis, TE, WAS (BYE) FPM Spin: With Chris Cooley possibly out for the season with an ankle injury, Davis becomes the new starting tight end in Washington. The Redskins are saying Cooley will be back in 4 weeks, but I'm not holding my breath on that projection. Davis came on in a big way last week catching 8 balls for 78 yards and a touchdown. Jason Campbell loves to check down to his tight ends, so Davis should continue to get a lot of balls thrown his way. Granted, the Redskins are on a bye this week, but as I've said in the past, this is the perfect time to grab him. He should make a solid #2 and maybe even a low-end #1 in deeper leagues.
Season Stats - 15 receptions, 123 yards, 1 TD
Shonn Greene, RB, NYJ (vs. MIA)
FPM Spin: Leon Washington going down with a broken leg opened the door for Greene to have a big day last week rushing for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Washington is expected to be done for the season, so Greene should step right in and continue to fill the same role. He's likely not going to see the same amount of carries per game as Washington did, but he should still make a decent flex play in deeper leagues. Any Leon Washington or Thomas Jones owners, with room on their roster, should stash Greene immediately. Consider him a decent #4 in most leagues.
Season Stats - 26 carries, 174 yards, 2 TD

Alex Smith, QB, SF (@ IND) FPM Spin: Smith was inserted into the game last week at halftime only to throw for 206 yards and three touchdowns, all to Vernon Davis. Head coach Mike Singletary has come out and named Smith the 49ers starting quarterback for Week 8. Now, don't go crazy here and think about starting Smith, but he's definitely someone to consider stashing, especially if you owned Shaun Hill. Smith may very well do nothing and become the backup again, but at least for the time being, he's the starter and has a chance to turn things around. He makes a very intriguing pick-up if you have the room. Consider Smith a low-end #2 in most leagues.
Season Stats - 206 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT
HONORABLE MENTIONSSam Aiken, WR, NE: Caught 2 balls for 66 yards and touchdown last week; could continue to make big plays as the Patriots #3 WR with Julian Edleman out.
Jacoby Jones, WR, HOU: Could make an impact in return yardage leagues, and also could make more of an impact in the passing game with Andre Johnson hurt and Kevin Walter not playing as well as expected.
Mike Wallace, WR, PIT: 2 catches and at least 47 yards in the last 5 straight games, has found the end zone in two of the last three games.
