Mick's Picks :: Week 13
by Scott Mickels
Published: November 27, 2008, 10:50 am

Make sure to check here every week! Each week I'll help you make those critical waiver wire decisions that can make or break your team. Also, check out the FPM Weekly podcast , to not only hear any changes to my Mick's Picks, but you can hear podcast co-host Matt Ridley, list of his "Ridley's Releases" as well.

Mick's Picks - Week 13

Derek Anderson, QB, CLE (vs. IND)

FPM Spin: With Golden Boy, Brady Quinn, out for the season with a broken finger, Anderson is once again the starting quarterback in Cleveland. He does have the ability to put up good fantasy numbers, but has yet to this season. In fact, he only has one game of over 240 yards passing--oddly enough, against the New York Giants. At this point last season, he had thrown for over 240 yards in 8 games. Hopefully with the way things have gone this season for the Browns, Anderson can provide a spark. If nothing else, perhaps he'll take this opportunity to show off his skills to other potential suitors in '09. All of you that grabbed Brady Quinn thinking they had turned the page in Cleveland, grab Anderson now while the gettin' is good.

Stats - 1,505 yards, 9 TD, 8 INT

Davone Bess, WR, MIA (@STL)

FPM Spin: Another player benefiting from a teammate's injury is Davone Bess. With Greg Camarillo out of the season with a knee injury, Bess becomes the #2 receiver in Miami. And he made an immediate impact with his best two outings of the season the last two weeks, catching 8 balls for a combined 137 yards. With more playing time he'll develop more of a rapport with quarterback Chad Pennington, meaning last week's production could become a regular thing. Another thing working in Bess' favor is the fact the Dolphins face very weak pass defenses in 4 of the last 5 games of the season. If you're thin at receiver and are looking for someone to fill a hole while you make that push for the playoffs, Bess could be a surprisingly viable option.

Stats - 24 receptions, 275 yards, 1 TD

Pierre Thomas, RB, NO (@TB)

FPM Spin: For the second straight week, Thomas was able to top 80 yards on at least 15 carries while shouldering the load of Reggie Bush. It was also the second straight week he found pay dirt. While Bush is expected to return for Week 13, he won't be 100%, so Thomas could still get around 10 carries. And he's done a great job this season of making the best of his opportunities as he's sporting an impressive 4.9 average per rush. With fantasy football playoffs right around the corner, Thomas should be considered at least a flex option in all leagues. If you're a Reggie Bush or Deuce McAllister owner, he makes great insurance for the stretch run.

Stats - 67 carries, 325 yards, 6 TD

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Lorenzo Booker, RB, PHI – Booker will backup Brian Westbrook with Buckhalter doubtful.

Heath Miller, TE, PIT – Returned in a big way in Week 12 with 4 catches for 44 yards and a score.

Maurice Morris, RB, SEA – great insurance for you Julius Jones owners.
