Mick's Picks :: Week 4
by Scott Mickels
Published: September 24, 2008, 9:08 pm

  Make sure to check here every week! Each week I’ll help you make those critical waiver wire decisions that can make or break your team. Also, check out the FPM Weekly podcast, to not only hear any changes to my Mick’s Picks, but you can hear podcast co-host Matt Ridley, list of his "Ridley’s Releases" as well.

Mick's Picks - Week 4

Correll Buckhalter, RB, PHI (@ CHI)

FPM Spin: With Brian Westbrook leaving last week's game in the second quarter with a sprained ankle, Buckhalter came in and performed admirably. He finished the game with 10 carries for 43 yards and a score while also contributing six catches for 44 yards. This week, however, it remains to be seen what role Buckhalter will fill; starter or back-up. Westbrook is currently considered day-to-day, so chances are he'll be a dreaded game-time decision. There's still a decent chance Westbrook will start this week. However, if you own Westbrook, you should absolutely grab Buckhalter. He has performed fairly well in spot starts in the past, so he makes a good insurance policy. If you're thin at RB because of injuries or bye weeks, Buckhalter could prove to be a valuable bye-week filler. Just keep an eye on the running back situation in Philadelphia before committing to Buckhalter this week.

Stats - 41 carries, 175 yards, 1 TD

Billy Miller, TE, NO (vs SF)

FPM Spin: Another player this week benefiting from a team mate's injury is Billy Miller. With Jeremy Shockey and Mark Campbell out for the Saints, Miller becomes the new starting tight end in New Orleans. Miller's best year was back in 2002 with the Texans where he caught 51 passes for 613 yards and three scores. Nowadays, however, he plays in a very potent offense and has a chance to put up decent numbers every week. Miller is probably best used as a back-up for now with the potential for more. But for now, he's best grabbed by Shockey owners and those in deep leagues hard up for a replacement tight end.  Miller also makes a decent bye-week filler until the Saints' Week 9 bye. That's because Shockey is expected back by Week 10, if not sooner. Miller is far from a sure thing, but you could do a lot worse.

Stats - 2 rec, 41 yds

Brady Quinn, QB, CLE (@ CIN)

FPM Spin: This is one pick that's probably best suited for a football version of Andrew Gould's “Ready to Pounce” baseball article. That's exactly what you should be ready to do with Quinn. The Browns have been a disappointment so far this season, especially their offense. As a result, the starting quarterback for the Browns was up in the air until coach Romeo Crennel announced Derek Anderson would remain the starter for Week 4. Still, with so much hoopla surrounding this situation, you can't help but wonder how soon we'll see Quinn under center. It seems though that Anderson will be given another chance this week to right the ship. If you're an Anderson owner, it would be wise to stash Quinn now as we could see a change of the guard very soon in Cleveland.
