Mick's Picks :: Week 11 by Scott Mickels Published: November 15, 2007, 3:16 pm
Make sure to check here every week! Find out who the hot players are to pick up and the slumping players you should bench. Each week I'll help you make those critical waiver wire decisions that can make or break your team. Mick's Picks - Week 11 Pick Up
John Beck, QB, MIA (@PHI)
FPM Spin: This is one primarily for you keeper leaguers. This week the Dolphins have named Beck their starting quarterback and are going to see what they have in the rookie out of BYU. Beck has good smarts, a good arm and should eventually have success in the NFL. However, he makes his NFL debut in one of the most hostile environments in the league. He's definitely not a good play this week, but deserves to be picked up in any keeper league because of his future potential.
Stats - No stats Justin Gage, WR, TEN (@DEN) FPM Spin: Now, let's talk to some of you deep leaguers out there. Gage virtually came out of nowhere last week catching 7 passes for 90 and a score. Slowly but surely Gage has become a quality possession receiver and is being targeted more and more by Vince Young. He shouldn't get the start this week as he goes up against the tough Denver secondary, but still deserves taking a flier on in deeper leagues.
Stats - 26 receptions, 313 yards, 1 TD Maurice Morris, RB, SEA (vs. CHI) FPM Spin: Morris got the start last Monday night in Seattle and rushed for 87 yards on 28 carries and a score. He also added 16 receiving yards. With Shaun Alexander's health in question, Morris could be in line for another decent game. It remains to be seen whether or not Alexander will play, but even if he does play, Morris has shown he's not only the better receiver out of the backfield, but he's been a much more effective runner. Because of that, a running back platoon could be looming in Seattle, but either way, Morris' fantasy value rises. He's worth a pick-up in most leagues or at the very least a must-handcuff for you Alexander owners. Stats - 56 carries, 216 yards, 1 TD
Bench
Kevin Curtis, WR, PHI (vs. MIA) FPM Spin: Curtis has cooled off mightily recently. He hasn't gained over 100 yards receiving or found the end zone in a month. To make matters worse, he's facing the Dolphins 5th ranked pass defense. But that's more of a case of teams being able to run all over them, so teams have no need to pass. In fact, the Dolphins haven't given up a passing touchdown in the last two weeks. There's a great chance Philly will get an early lead which will lead them to primarily running the ball, thus leaving Curtis out of the offense. This week Curtis belongs on your bench for a better option.
Stats - 40 receptions, 653 yards, 4 TD Thomas Jones, RB, NYJ (vs. PIT) FPM Spin: Jones has thoroughly disappointed fantasy owners this year. He has yet to score a touchdown and has only rushed for over 100 yards in game twice all season. And the last time that happened was during Week 6 against Philly. Things don't get any easier for Jones this week as he faces Pittsburgh's #1 ranked rush defense that has only allowed two rushing touchdowns all year. At this point, he barely registers as a flex option. Keep him on your bench for Week 11. Stats - 160 carries, 606 yards, 0 TD Phillip Rivers, QB, SD (@ JAX) FPM Spin: Rivers has seemingly pulled a 180 in his play this season after making the Pro Bowl a year ago. More than the fact that the Charges offense isn't performing like it should, Rivers is habitually turning the ball over. He's thrown 10 interceptions to match his 10 touchdowns, and coincidentally has a league-leading 10 fumbles as well. The talent and weapons in San Diego are undeniable, but Rivers hasn't been able to find any kind of consistency this year. I don't know if the blame lies on Rivers who seems to be pressing too hard or head coach Norv Turner who seems to have messed a well-oiled machine in the Chargers offense. Either way, Rivers is a #2 QB at best in any league right now. Unless you're desperate, park him on your bench. Stats - 1,743 yards, 10 TD, 10 INT
