Studs and Duds :: 5/21-5/27

Studs of the Week

Jake Peavy (SP, San Diego Padres)

Peavy had a fantastic fantasy week in Week 8 as he won both of his starts. He managed to drop that league-leading ERA down a bit more from 1.63 to 1.47. He also got his 7th win of the season on Sunday, tying him for the NL lead. Peavy is easily the top pitcher in fantasy right now. He’s a must-start in any league.

Week 8 Stats - 13 IP, 14 K, 2 BB, 1 ER, 2 W

Casey Blake (1B,3B,OF Cleveland Indians)

Blake was on fire last week hitting .348 in Week 8. He’s currently riding a 5-game hitting streak going into Week 9. The move up to the Indians #2 spot in their batting order has seemed to bring a little life to Blake’s bat. He’s still a marginal player, but deserves some consideration to be put in your lineup while he’s hot.

Week 8 Stats - 8-23, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 8 R, 6 BB

Studs Honorable Mention: Jason Bay, Joe Borowski, A. J. Burnett, Brian Fuentes, Livan Hernandez, Trevor Hoffman, Justin Morneau, Magglio Ordonez, Ichiro Suzuki and Nick Swisher.

Duds of the Week

Joe Blanton (SP, Oakland Athletics)

Blanton was absolutely lit-up in Week 8. He saw his ERA rise from 3.32 at the beginning of the week to 4.28 two starts later. He’s still a decent start in deeper leagues, but if you can afford to, consider sitting Blanton for a start or two until he gets back on track.

Week 8 Stats - 11.1 IP, 6 K, 3 BB, 12 ER, 2 L

Pat Burrell (OF, Philadelphia Phillies)

Burrell was completely worthless to you traditional 5x5 Roto leaguers in Week 8. He managed nothing more than four walks the entire week. He’s been so bad at the plate Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel has decided to bench him. He’s hitting an atrocious .189 for the month and a miserable .226 for the season. With his bat going ice cold and his playing time getting compromised, Burrell belongs on your bench in even the deepest of leagues.

Week 8 Stats - 0-15, 4 BB

Duds Dishonorable Mention: Bronson Arroyo, Garrett Atkins, Lance Berkman, Jack Cust, Aubrey Huff, Cliff Lee, Derrek Lee, Gil Meche, Roy Oswalt and Ervin Santana.
