Studs and Duds :: 4/30-5/6
by Scott Mickels
Published: May 8, 2007, 8:21 pm

April 30th – May 6th

Studs of the Week

Jeff Suppan (SP, Milwaukee Brewers)

Suppan is as hot as any pitcher in the league right now. His Week 5 was highlighted by a complete game against the Cardinals. After losing his first two starts of the season, Suppan is 5-0 with a 2.06 ERA. Keep him active in all leagues.

Week 5 Stats - 14.2 IP, 10 K, 3 BB, 3 ER, 2 W

Prince Fielder (1B, Milwaukee Brewers)

Fielder was named National League Player of the Week in Week 5. He got a hit in every game and hit .440 for the week. Like most predicted, Fielder is having a breakout season and is on his way to becoming a bona fide fantasy stud. Keep him in your lineup.

Week 5 Stats - 11-25, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 8 R, 4 BB

Studs Honorable Mention: Ken Griffey Jr., C. C. Sabathia, Gary Sheffield, Ryan Dempster, Vladimir Guerrero, Todd Jones, Hideki Matsui and Cole Hamels.

Duds of the Week

Zach Greinke (SP, Kansas City Royals)

Just the opposite of Suppan, Greinke has been ice cold recently. He’s given up 20 earned runs in his last 21.2 innings pitched. With Scott Elarton and Luke Hudson close to returning from the DL, there are now rumors of Greinke getting sent to the Royals’ bullpen. Nothing is set in stone as of yet, but Greinke should definitely be benched until further notice. If his demotion to the pen comes to fruition, you could absolutely justify dropping him in all leagues.

Week 5 Stats - 9 IP, 4 K, 2 BB, 12 ER, 2 L

Scott Rolen (3B, St. Louis Cardinals)

Rolen is one of the streakiest hitters in baseball. He was 0-18 before finally getting a hit in Sunday’s game against the Astros. Rolen hit .047 for the week, lowering his average to .208. He’s bound to get out of this slump, so he should remain in your lineup. If you have a better option at third, you might consider benching him for a week or two until his bat heats up. Otherwise, keep him in there and wait it out.

Week 5 Stats - 1-21, 2 RBI, 1 BB

Duds Dishonorable Mention: Paul Konerko, Kip Wells, Ian Kinsler, Jeremy Sowers, Ichiro Suzuki, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Michael Barrett and Matt Cain.
