Studs and Duds :: 5/7-5/13
by Scott Mickels
Published: May 15, 2007, 7:10 pm

May 7th - May 13th

Studs of the Week

Brad Penny (SP, Los Angeles Dodgers)

Penny had a fantastic week in Week 6, highlighted by striking out 14 Marlins in 7 innings of shutout baseball. He followed that up by only giving up one earned run in 6.1 innings against the Reds. Don’t start expecting him to put up those kinds of numbers in the strikeout department weekly, but he’s still a must-start in all leagues.

Week 6 Stats - 13.1 IP, 18 K, 1 BB, 1 ER, 2 W

Ken Griffey Jr. (OF, Cincinnati Reds)

Griffey Jr. found the fountain of youth this week. He went yard three times and hit .400 for the week. We’ve always known he’s a productive player when healthy, but those times are far and few between. Keep him in your lineup while he’s hot. He remains a must-start in all leagues while he’s healthy.

Week 6 Stats - 10-25, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 3 R, 5 BB, 1 SB

Studs Honorable Mention: Mike Lowell, Kelvim Escobar, Gary Matthews Jr., Jason Marquis, Lance Berkman, Brandon Webb, David Ortiz, Billy Wagner, Justin Morneau and Roy Oswalt.

Duds of the Week

Kyle Lohse (SP, Cincinnati Reds)

Lohse owners got no love from their boy last week. Lohse lost both starts, including one in which he gave up 6 earned runs in only 4 innings of work. He’s given up 20 earned runs in his last 23.1 innings pitched and is 0-4 during that span. Lohse belongs on your bench regardless of the match-up until he gets back on track. For those of you with a deep pitching staff, you could probably afford to drop him.

Week 6 Stats - 11.1 IP, 6 K, 5 BB, 9 ER, 2 L

Delmon Young (OF, Tampa Bay Devil Rays)

Young struggled mightily this past week only managing two hits the entire week. He’s still having trouble adjusting to playing full-time in the majors, but an adjustment period was expected. If you have a better option in the OF than Young, you might consider using him until Young’s bat heats up. Despite his struggles at the plate, Young remains a must-start in all leagues.

Week 6 Stats - 2-23, 1 BB

Duds Dishonorable Mention: Rocco Baldelli, Livan Hernandez, Ivan Rodriguez, Chien-Ming Wang, Josh Hamilton, Joe Borowski, Garret Atkins, Chris Ray, Robinson Cano, and Jason Hirsh.
