3 Up, 3 Down :: 5/02
by Tenacious D-Store
Published: May 2, 2008, 8:20 pm

Welcome back for more 3 up 3 down with the amazing Tenacious D-Store. We'll also have some fun with a Yankees fan who's feelings were hurt last week. Unfortunately, he talks like a Yankees fan too and his comment is unpublishable. First this weeks 3 up and 3 down.

3 UP

 Chad Gaudin - I'm starting to think that anyone the Blue Jays give up on is destined to become a future stud. In true Blue Jays fashion they gave Gaudin a whole 13 innings to prove his worth, and after watching his ERA climb to 13.15, decided he was worthless trading him to Oakland for Dustin Majewski. Who is Dustin Majewski? Don't worry The Jays don't remember him either. Gaudin is never going to win a Cy Young award or strike out 200 batters in a season, and he'll probably never win 20 games in a season either. He is a damn fine pitcher though who finally seems ready for the show. Gaudin is capable of a 16 win season while maintaining an ERA of about 3.00 and people are starting to notice. His ownership percentage in 10 team leagues has jumped from 5% to 57% in the past couple of weeks. So if you are looking to fill out your fantasy rotation, act now. His ownership will continue to rise as more people realize that this is a quality pitcher and not just a hot start. Gaudin was overlooked as a prospect due to the fact that he was used in middle relief during his time in the minors, but he still managed to maintain a relatively low ERA and WHIP even then. Gaudin's hard breaking slider will have batters swinging at air for a long time to come.

 Doug Brocail - I was planing to add a second ex-Blue Jay and future stud closer by the name of Aquilino Lopez to this weeks column, but CBS Sportsline beat me to the punch making him one of the most added middle relievers this week after they ran a front page story on him. If you were a little tardy with that move yourself and are looking to add a pitcher who may close in the near future, keep an eye on Doug Brocail. He's defiantly older than Lopez, but with Valverde struggling the Astro's have already allowed Brocail to step in and close out a game this season. Brocail did not disappoint either, striking out two and allowing only a Jimmy Rollins single. At 41 years old he may not be someone you want to rush to add in keeper or dynasty leagues, but if you are desperate for closers he is worthy of consideration. I personally can't believe that Astros fans haven't rushed the field and run Valverde up the gallows pole yet, the fact that he is still permitted on the mound to close out games is ridiculous. The Astro's invested a lot in Valverde but their patience has to be wearing thin.

 Erick Aybar - Angels GM and former Director of Player Development Tony Reagins recently stated that the club will be committed to giving Erick Aybar regular at bats for the rest of the season. Well, no s**t Sherlock. What's the alternative? Maicer Izturis and his.190 BA. That's not really fair to Izturis as he is really more of a .270 hitter, but lets face facts. Izturis is just another multi-positional bench player. Erick Aybar on the other hand, has consistently hit over .300 at every stage of his career. He has an amazing plate presence and ability to get on base, not to mention decent speed. Aybar is a great pick up in AL only leagues and any league that uses a middle infielder, but also a decent injury replacement and free agent pick up for guys who are wondering if Tulo is planning to ever hit the ball this season. Don't expect any power numbers from him, but a .310 BA, 60 RBI's, 90 runs, and 20 stolen bases isn't too shabby for a free agent short stop.

3 Down

 Matt Cain - Matt Cain has lasted an average of 4.5 innings in his starts so far this season. Although I think he is a better pitcher than what we've seen thus far I have to wonder if he's just stopped caring. The Giants have limited him to 22 wins in 74 career starts, that's less than a 30% winning percentage. Really why should he care? The Giants need to trade him not for their own good, but for his. Cain is locked into a contract with the Giants until the end of the 2010 season, the Giants also hold a club option for 2011. That's just not fair to see so much talent tangled in a web of despair, it's time you all give up on Cain for now too.

 Adam Lind - I had predicted that the Toronto Blue Jays would call up Travis Snider after the hump and dump they pulled on Frank Thomas, but J.P. Ricciardi decided to use Adam Lind once again, further proving that he is a moron. Lind has had his chances and has proven that he can not consistently produce at the major league level. He went from ripping it up in the minors this season to a 1 for 13 start after his call up. His short outburst last season after his call up got fans excited, but was easily forgettable when he showed what he was really made of going hitless game after game before being sent down again. The Jays are full of talent but continue to be a pitiful team due to poor managerial decisions. We should all be getting our first look at Travis Snider right now despite the fact that he is off to a slow start for the AAA Sky Chiefs this season. Hopefully when Snider gets hot and Lind is still not, they will make the right decision. Lind is not worth adding even in AL only leagues.

 Kevin Kouzmanoff - OK we've all seen what Kevin Kouzmanoff brings to the table and aren't impressed. Where the hell is Chase Headley?! In the words of Forrest Gump "That's all I have to say about that".

Not So Fast

 Carlos Gomez - Carlos Gomez was dropped in nearly every league after suffering a minor calf injury. Those in roto leagues of 12 or more teams, should have scooped him up immediately. To say that Gomez is fast is an understatement. He's a lot like what Juan Pierre was about 6 years ago when he was batting .320 and stealing 60 bases. Even now that he is back in the active line up getting on base and swiping bags, he is still being ignored. If you need some speed go get him, if not go get him anyway and trade him in a month after people finally clue in to his value.

 Armando Galarraga - I'm not quite sure what I just witnessed this week. Armando Galarraga was added in many of my leagues with weekly line ups for his two start week. He had two amazing lights out performances striking out nearly a batter per inning and winning both games. Then all those same people dropped him again. That doesn't make much sense. I can only assume that these people believe that Galarraga's time in the rotation will be short lived when Dontrelle Willis returns. Have you seen Dontrelle Willis pitch lately? How about Kenny Rogers or Nate Robertson? Believe me there is plenty of room for Armando Galarraga in that rotation. If you could afford to drop someone to pick up Galarraga then you certainly had the roster spot to hang on to a pitcher who has done nothing but dominate hitters. At least wait until the Tigers make a decision, before doing something stupid.

- Steve - Montgomery, MA

A perfectly good manly name like Steve and you insist on calling yourself "Snowflake" on public forums. Anyway thanks for the question Steve. My answer is short and sweet just like your forum handle. Bonderman sucks and Penny is just kinda ho-hum. Not worth a top pitcher. It's like trading a 50 dollar bill for a couple of 20's and being excited because 2 is more than 1. Your pitching is fine. Don't make trades just for the sake of trading. You might want to consider dropping some of those bench hitters for more pitchers though especially if your league has daily line ups.

- Some Pissed Off Yankees Fan

Although some of the words you used in your e-mail can be posted on this site, they don't make a whole lot of sense after removing the words that are not permitted here. Since you were too cowardly to leave your name, we'll have to refer to you as "Pissed Off Yankees Fan". The fact that you believe Phil Hughes is future Cy Young material is actually quite humorous in an incredibly pathetic sort of way. You Yankees fans are all the same. Why don't you wait until Phil Hughes does something noteworthy before making a fool of yourself? I stand by my Phil Hughes comments 100% and I am confident that I will never have to eat my words. Phil Hughes stinks period. You are free to send me future questions or comments, but until you clean up that potty mouth I cannot include them in this column and well have to disregard them. EDIT: How do you feel now that the Yankees have pulled him out of the rotation, Genius.
